A ROOM WITH JOIE DE VIVRE

This great room was designed to be lived in. The homeowner, a New Orleans-native and musician, wanted an interactive space where her family could enjoy everything from movie night to evening jam sessions. The end result is a colorful and dynamic space that evokes memories of the homeowner’s bayou birthplace.

The catalyst for the overall color scheme was the Harlequin Amazillia Spray Dyed velvet, featured on the small ottomans and pillows. Originally spotted at a boutique in the French Quarter, the velvet is an abstract ombré stripe with vibrant blue hues.

The biggest challenge was the balanced blending of bold patterns, so as not to overwhelm the space. The designer achieved this by selecting fabrics that feature a variety of pattern size and scale. For instance, the large-scale floral drapery print is offset by the solid blue chairs and geometric sofa fabric. Additionally, the hair-on-hide ottoman, centered in the room, adds depth and texture to the mix.

A confident mix of antiques, modern pieces and original artwork jazzes up this, otherwise, traditional living room. And a vintage hand-knotted Persian rug was sheared to the knot and over dyed to achieve its distressed appeal.

The designer commissioned a local cabinetmaker to craft the custom stereo cabinet, adding a bright pop of color and cleverly concealing speakers behind the Golden Lion European brass grille.

With fearless color, grand gestures and bold patterns, the party never stops in this lively living room space.
