A SWEEPING SPACE WITH BESPOKE DETAILS

This condominium is within a historically significant Art Deco building in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood and features high-rise views of the city and majestic Forest Park. The owners, transitioning from a suburban home to a sophisticated empty nest, wanted a design that would embrace the remarkable views, and feature bespoke elements and furnishings throughout.

A three-year renovation sought to capitalize on the 17-foot ceilings and visually raise the features of the home. What had been floor-hugging and out-of-scale was replaced with sweeping elements that create a space that now feels elegant, with a clean interpretation of classic furnishings.

The Great Room is anchored with a full-length chimney breast that – along with new millwork at the ceiling, marble fireplace surround and mantel – helps balance the height of the room. The homeowner’s art collection, especially the large piece in the Great Room, drove the palate of colored neutrals and grayed pastels. The rug’s raised and faded pattern lends a lived-in ambience – an intention throughout the home to instill comfort while showcasing distinct items that, in combination, feel like a collection of life’s travels and experiences.

The Dining Room is a relatively small space that, again, presented a challenge given the scale. The designer chose impressive pieces by Hudson Furniture to connect the room: a 13-foot-long stainless-steel chandelier towers over a custom table made of a solid walnut slab resting on a high-polished bronze base.

Finally, the Master Suite is a tightly choreographed balancing act. A de Gournay Plum Blossom wall cover was hung precisely to bring the headboard and side tables in perfect symmetry between two branches, while the hand-tufted rug from the House of Tai Ping equally frames the furniture from the floor. The Master Bath reflects a gender-neutral elegant use of antiqued mirror insets and custom cabinetry.
