A COLOR STORY
Growing up with a renowned artist as a mother, the owners of this soulful dining room recognize that color clearly conveys mood. So, they set out to create a gathering space for their expanding family that incorporated a palette both beautiful and calming.
The project’s designer developed a monochromatic color scheme of soft blue tones to evoke a peaceful, tranquil feel. As such, this tone-on-tone design also becomes the perfect understated backdrop for the homeowners’ bold, graphic art.
Set within a traditional home, the designer felt it important to respect the room’s historic details while highlighting the couple’s modern aesthetic. The ornate plaster crown molding is updated with a fresh paint color to blend seamlessly with the Phillip Jeffries metallic Soho Hemp wallcovering. In addition, the classic ceiling medallion is juxtaposed with a contemporary brass chandelier.
Selected furniture boasts bold shapes and clean-lined appeal. Imported from Spain, the oversized Uves table anchors the room and comfortably seats ten people for larger gatherings. The Zarina dining chair with its playful signature oval back-rest sets the modern tone and is finished in a custom-colored Hale Navy matte lacquer.
A delicate semi-plain sheer with jacquard texture from Romo dresses the windows, allowing light to filter into the room while providing privacy. The classic Mariposa Rug bridges the modern and traditional elements to provide balance to the space.
The restful design ensures Donald Sultan’s iconic, large-scale, still life painting is the star of the space. It becomes the perfect contrast of geometric and organic forms.
Art can be biographical – telling a personal story of inspiration affecting a specific moment in your life. For these homeowners, this artful gathering space documents treasured times with friends, loved ones and their growing family.
