GOING GREEN

Nestled on a quiet St. Louis street is a stately, traditional home that boasts front row seats to the surrounding nature and plenty of space to entertain its outdoorsy family of four. The goal of this project was to optimize the home’s previously large, under-used living room to be a functional space blending rest, entertainment and sophistication with the family’s love of the outdoors.

By reworking the room’s long layout, the designer was able to create three distinct sections of this room. Adding a pendant light in the center of the room helped anchor the space and direct the eye to the focal point: a dark geometric table with leather and wrought iron stools. Shifting your gaze right to the sitting area, the designer reconfigured the layout to be both inviting and cozy by combining textures, patterns in both traditional and unexpected ways.

Green velvet sofas ground the room while interacting with nature through the adjacent window. A textured, tan grasscloth instantly elevates the room and incorporates a natural element. Camouflage inspired toile swivel chairs adorned with fringe effortlessly combine organic hues with traditional sophistication. Cinnamon-colored drapes tie in hues from the grasscloth and display an unexpected pattern piquing visual interest. And details reflecting the family’s affinity for the outdoors are incorporated throughout the room: trophied mallards pepper the shelves and binoculars sit at an arm’s length away from the swivels for optimal wildlife watching.

An elevated renovation seamlessly blending elements from the rest of the home, this living room feels like it was always meant to be here.
