HANDSOME COASTAL
Inspired by Florida’s charming coastal towns of 30A, the homeowner and designer coined this project “handsome coastal”. This renovation sought to bring more light, function and style into a family’s home who loves to entertain.
This office needed to be a functional office for a boss that could quickly double as a swanky entertaining space for a cocktail hour or dinner party hors d’oeuvres. A Murphy desk neatly hides in the built-ins, large tamboured drawers double as filing cabinets, and a custom compartment holds the printer.
Keeping with handsome coastal theme, the designer color-drenched the room in Sherwin Williams’ Samovar Silver, a calm but brilliant blue that provides a tranquil palette and a breath of fresh air as you enter.
Color and scale play a huge role in the room’s composition: An arched doorway and doors were added to warmly contrast the blue and frame the space. Large unlacquered brass handles on the filing cabinet drawers against its small tamboured face ensure neither the detailing nor the drawer gets lost in the sea of blue. And the client’s own art serves as the focal point for the room, where the colors seem to be engaging in a light-hearted conversation with the rest of the space.
With a meeting at 4 P.M. and a cocktail hour at 5 P.M., this handsome coastal office exhibits multitasking at its finest.
Across the hallway in the dining room, formerly the living room, this space was in desperate need of a “zhuzh” as it felt dark and dated. Requirements for this room were simple: to effortlessly weave the clients’ handsome coastal style into the room, design a new fireplace and bar area, bring in more light, and to include two kegs for beer on tap.
The design team worked diligently to meet this criteria resulting in a room that was not only sophisticated but also well-equipped for maximum entertaining.
Plaster ceilings were replaced with a cove, an intricate beam design and a blue-gray grasscloth to add sophistication and depth to the room. A custom, birch limestone fireplace was scaled to fit the room adding elevated style. Custom cabinetry was designed to hold the wine fridge and plenty of glassware to transform the dining room into a proper entertaining area. An antique mirror backsplash on the cabinet shelves helps open up the space. Three sets of window-paneled double doors bring more light and function into the room. A frosted, silver statement chandelier from Currey & Company anchors the room while pulling together the other coastal elements in the home. And the bar counter under the window that overlooks the beautiful outdoor living space and pool can double as a walk-up pool bar by simply opening the window.
Handsomely dressed for entertainment, this home is ready for family and guests aplenty.
