LIKE A ROLLING STONE

Striking a balance between contemporary tidiness and timeless details, this handsome 100-year-old residence sought to add rhythm and sophistication to the first-floor layout. For this father-and-sons trio, having a home that put entertaining at the focal point and incorporated their love of music was essential when reimagining this historical home.

The design team started by opening up the kitchen and adjacent living room to create two distinct yet seamless spaces. The living room became a cozy library with wrap-around bookshelves, while the kitchen, the heart of the project, became an open and inviting space centered around the bar area meant for both anchoring the room and encouraging gatherings.
From here, the challenge was to effectively mix classic and contemporary elements into the kitchen. Richly-toned and locally-made American walnut cabinetry, a mix of handsome natural stone countertops, and mixed metal finishes punctuate and tailor the space.
A clean and symmetrical layout thoughtfully grounds the kitchen’s openness. Ribbed glass cabinetry flanks the striking matte-black and gold-banded hood, serving as the focal point of the kitchen. Transom windows above the cabinets help make sense of the tall ceilings, while box beams overhead help define the space and create a sense of scale.
The neighboring butler’s pantry connects the new addition with the old. The countertop stone continues from the kitchen design, and cabinets are painted in Benjamin Moore’s classic Hale Navy, a color inspired by rich American architectural tradition.
This home renovation did not forgo the home’s original sensibility; a perfect duet between the old and the new, this handsome and sophisticated kitchen hits all the right notes.
