REFRESHED AND REFINED

What started as a dining room facelift for this stately home quickly evolved, room by room, to a first-floor renovation. For the homeowners who love to entertain their large family and many friends, having a home that could refresh the layout for modern life while keeping in tune with its classic tradition was essential.

In the months leading up to construction, the designer carefully worked with the homeowners and their refined taste to understand what kind of home they wanted to live in, while collaborating meticulously alongside a highly skilled design team, including the home’s original architect, to achieve this goal. The project was guided by a primary objective: to reimagine the layout as tailored, well-appointed, light-filled, and equipped for hosting.

The former living room was transformed into a grand dining room with soaring ceilings by adding exquisite beams, built-in cabinets, and an impressive floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. The previously large kitchen was reimagined into two spaces: a smaller, more functional kitchen and a handsome barrel-vaulted butler’s pantry, to better accommodate the client’s use of space. The kitchen, with its rich and classic design elements, state-of-the-art appliances, and newly-added windows to let in new light, is a striking display of refined taste. The hearth room off the kitchen continues the home’s color story by drenching both spaces in a creamy white that embraces the home’s large scale. And the butler’s pantry, clad in striking lacquered olive cabinetry and a luxurious, beaded-edged pewter countertop and backsplash, exudes a tailored flavor and a persistent invitation for hosting.

The neighboring bar room is a cozy juxtaposition to the surrounding light-filled spaces. Layered with sophisticated elements of chestnut mohair, moody black crocodile vinyl wallcovering, a custom burled-wood credenza, and a black lacquered bar cart, this bar room serves as a place to host intimate gatherings or as a quiet respite with a full house. The powder room, just down the hall, is dressed in cultivated details. A large-print grasscloth wallcovering adorns the walls, and a custom, bespoke vanity with an oversized apron makes a dramatic statement.
